Shirley Wong Lawsuits and Complaints: 17 Customer Disputes
BrokerCheck lists 17 customer disputes against Wong. Ten ended in settlements, five were withdrawn, and two are still pending. The claims allege unsuitable recommendations, breach of fiduciary duty, negligence, misrepresentation, and violations of Regulation Best Interest. One 2025 claim also alleged a violation of California’s financial elder abuse law.
GWG L Bond Claims at NI Advisors
Most of the complaints involve corporate bonds Wong allegedly sold at NI Advisors between 2018 and 2020. Several name GWG L Bonds directly. GWG Holdings filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in April 2022, and bondholders suffered heavy losses. One 2023 claim also involved The Parking REIT.
Settlements on Wong’s Record
The 10 settled disputes total about $447,500, according to BrokerCheck. Wong personally paid toward seven of them. A settlement is not an admission of wrongdoing, and Wong has disputed some claims. In one, she stated there was no record the customer bought the bond.

Pending Claims Involving Private Placements and Real Estate
Two complaints filed in 2026 remain open. A FINRA arbitration filed in late summer 2026 alleges Wong made unsuitable recommendations of alternative investments, including private placements, at NI Advisors from 2019 through 2024. It also alleges fraud and breach of fiduciary duty and seeks $500,000 to $1,000,000.
The second is a written complaint from August 2026, the only one tied to Emerson Equity. It alleges Wong made misstatements and failed to disclose liquidity problems and risks in real estate investments bought from 2023 to 2025. It seeks $449,600 and cites California’s financial elder abuse statutes. Both matters are unresolved allegations.
Withdrawn Complaints
Five claims were withdrawn. They include a $505,700 claim over 2020 trades and a $500,000 claim over 2017 private placement sales. The rest involved corporate bonds bought in 2018 through 2020.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I file a claim to recover money I invested through Shirley Wong?
You can file a claim through FINRA arbitration, and arbitration can result in a monetary recovery. Most brokerage account agreements typically include a pre-dispute arbitration clause, which many investors don’t know is there. That clause generally sends claims to FINRA arbitration instead of court, and the claim can name the firm Wong was registered with when you invested.
What is an unsuitable investment recommendation, and why does it matter for GWG L Bonds or private placements?
A recommendation is unsuitable when it doesn’t fit your age, goals, risk tolerance, or need to access your money. GWG L Bonds and private placements are high-risk and hard to sell, so they can be a poor fit for conservative or retired investors. Since mid-2020, Regulation Best Interest has also required brokers to put retail customers’ interests first when making a recommendation.
Can NI Advisors or Emerson Equity be held responsible for my losses?
Yes, a brokerage firm can be liable for failing to supervise its brokers. FINRA Rule 3110 requires firms to supervise the recommendations their representatives make. That responsibility stays with the firm Wong worked for when you invested, even though she has since moved.
