Multiple media outlets are reporting that John R. Graves and his wife Sara Turberville Graves have been charged with running an investment scheme which cost investors about $1.3 million. Mr and Mrs. Graves were indicted by a federal grand jury in Virginia for mail and wire fraud.
John Graves was with the FBI until he resigned from the bureau in 1999. He founded a company, Brook Point Management in 2003 through which he offered a variety of financial services.
According to the Washington Post, “Prosecutors say that during a three-year span ending in July, Graves and his wife raised $1.3 million in funds from 11 people through ‘misrepresentations about the safety and security of the investments.’” The couple was using the money raised not to invest, but allegedly to pay early investors, pay personal debts and buy real estate.
During at least part of this time period John Graves was working as a registered broker with firms that have or had standing with FINRA according to his FINRA.org CRD.
