Mall Reits suffer as more retailers close their doors.
According to reports, the news on the Toys “R” Us bankruptcy last week has sent the share price of mall REITs, such as Kimco Realty (KIM), spiraling downward.
Kimco Realty Corporation is a real estate investment trust headquartered in New Hyde Park, New York., that is one of North America’s largest publicly traded owner and operator of open-air shopping centers.
According to Business Insider, “At $14.25, shares {of Kimco Realty} are down 37% from a year ago and 56% since the end of July 2016.”
In addition, with shares down, the company will likely need to preserve capital. Unfortunately, it appears likely that investors will see dividend cuts in the future.
With the decline of malls and shopping centers and the increase in online shopping, the future for Retail REITs, such as Kimco Realty, is not bright.
